For the design of mixed bilayers with the DOPC helper lipid, cis -ssPalmO-phe was selected, as trans fatty acid containing lipids are known to negatively impact membrane associated functions critical to human health, such as lipid metabolism, membrane protein activity, and cell signaling. The cis isomer of ssPalmO-phe is both self-degradable and biocompatible, while the cis form of ssPalmO-ben lacks self-degradability.
