State government reporter for Tulsa World tinyurl.com/melissajacques

Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! Way more difficult than they appear but very fun to use.

How is social media changing news?

It's making news less nuanced - due to the short amount of time you have to make your point - but more available than ever.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I love a good outline with links and general questions that you're trying to answer. It makes discussing a story straightforward.

Why did you become a journalist?

I read Hunter S. Thompson's "Hells Angels: A strange and terrible saga" in high school. Luckily most reporting is nothing like that.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Show up early and read everything you can about the topic before you go cover something. Its surprising how many people are impressed by that

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Bitter Southerner - great longform pieces about the American South

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

People seem to think that government reporting is always fast-paced and high-stakes. Most of it is tedious reading through bills and rules.
