Delaware’s nearly $7 billion operating budget along with $146 million in one-time expenses passed the House by a 36-3 vote June 24, finalizing each for Fiscal Year 2027. Both bills previously passed the Senate and need no further approval. Before his no vote, Rep. Bryan Shupe, R-Milford, said he was doing so because a 6.3% increase in spending when revenues are only increasing about 2% is not sustainable.

Solar projects take advantage of quicker permitting

Community solar facilities are beginning to crop up across Delaware’s farmland, but the permitting process has been slow for some. That may soon change through the JobsFirst Permitting Accelerator program created in February through executive order by Gov. Matt Meyer. Standing in a field of solar panels off Route 8 near Hartly June 23, Meyer touted four community solar projects that will benefit from quicker permitting, and ultimately provide 16 megawatts of electricity into the power grid.

Delmarva Power interim rate increase tabled

Delmarva Power and Light has lowered its interim rate increase by about 40%, but with pending legislation seeking a larger decrease, the Public Service Commission postponed action to early July. During the June 24 PSC meeting, DPL Assistant General Counsel Zi-Xiang Shen acknowledged concerns about energy costs and customer affordability during her request for a Thursday, July 9 increase of $3.39 per month for residential customers who use 826 kilowatt hours of electricity.
