Serpentinite and the search for life beyond Earth

1. Introduction Earth’s biosphere is supported by the overturning of the mantle by solid-state convection. The recycling of oxidized crustal Fe3+ in exchange for mantle Fe2+ appears to rejuvenate the reducing power of the crust [1]. Much of this reducing power is from serpentinization [2]. The geodynamic cycles of other planets are less well understood, but it seems likely that if life is present on other worlds, serpentinization has some role in supporting it.
