Isotopic constraints on the origin of reactive chlorine in the troposphere
Abstract Oceanic and anthropogenic processes, such as sea-salt emissions and combustion activities, release substantial amount of reactive chlorine into the troposphere, affecting air quality, ozone depletion, and climate change. However, distinguishing between these sources for reactive chlorine remains challenging. Here, we establish isotopic constraints on the origin of tropospheric reactive chlorine using chemical ionization mass spectrometry to analyze nitryl chloride (ClNO2).

Changing aerosol chemistry is redefining HONO sources - Nature Communications
|
Abstract Heterogeneous reactions of NO2 on particulate matter have been considered an important source of HONO (Nitrous acid) in the troposphere, whereas its contribution is controversial due to the lack of uptake coefficient of NO2 (γNO2) on the surfaces of ambient particulate matter (PM). Here we investigate the the γNO2 to form HONO and its evolution based on long-term comprehensive field observations (2019–2023) in Beijing and a random forest model with Shapley additive explanations.

Increasing contribution of nighttime nitrogen chemistry to wintertime haze formation in Beijing observed during COVID-19 lockdowns - Nature Geoscience
Abstract Nitrate comprises the largest fraction of fine particulate matter in China during severe haze. Consequently, strict control of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions has been regarded as an effective measure to combat air pollution. However, this notion is challenged by the persistent severe haze pollution observed during the COVID-19 lockdown when NOx levels substantially declined.
