INTRODUCTION The mucus epithelial cell monolayer is a crucial physical barrier that allows the absorption of nutrients. The gut microbiota is closely linked to the physiological and immunological functions of the host.1, 2 Commensal bacteria contribute to the control of the gut microbiota and their metabolites. The mucus barrier prevents bacterial invasion and regulates bacterial circulation in the host. Therefore, unbalanced gut microbiota poses a risk of gut barrier malfunction.
