Water is a critical component of the earth's life support system, yet many societies face water scarcity because of population growth, intensive land use, and corresponding increases in water demand. Climate change and increased population, among other factors, will require communities to address the problem of water quality degradation (Haddeland et al. 2014). Both scarcity and degradation of water quality are projected to place severe demands on water resources (Schewe et al. 2014).
