What did Jesus really look like?
Currently making the news is a report on a reconstruction of what is being called Jesus’s face. The reconstruction, by British anatomical artist Richard Neave, is actually more than a decade old, but it recently has started doing the rounds again – fitting given the time of year. Rather than intending to show precisely what Jesus might have looked like, the project sought to demonstrate what an average Judean in the first century of the Common Era might have looked like.
The Narrative Purpose of Climate Change Litigation
In February, 95 percent of countries missed the United Nations’s deadline to submit new climate action plans as mandated by the Paris Agreement. This includes the European Union, China, India, Canada, Japan, and many other high-emitting countries, some of which have received criticism for their draft plans not being ambitious enough.
Mary: as a Biblical scholar, I can’t recommend this right-wing funded Netflix biopic
By Meredith Warren, Senior Lecturer in Biblical and Religious Studies, University of Sheffield My critiques of Mary centre around two themes. One is the way it perpetuates conservative ideals around women and gender. The other is its misrepresentations of Jews and Judaism. Read complete article © The Conversation -
Mary: as a Biblical scholar, I can’t recommend this right-wing funded Netflix biopic
I wish I could say that Mary, mother of God, riding a horse through a wall of fire was the worst thing about Netflix’s Mary. As an unrepentant fan of some truly unrealistic films, I can forgive a lot of entertaining embellishment in a movie. But, watching the film, the cinematic choices felt more like promotion for a conservative Christian nationalist agenda. As a biblical scholar who has published widely on the , and on Christian , I was looking forward to watching Mary.
Progressive Christian Election Response ‘Give us Barabbas’ May Be Well-Meaning - But Functions as Anti-Jewish Dogwhistle
In the wake of the 2024 United States presidential election, “Give us Barabbas” emerged in progressive Christian social media circles as a pithy critique of those who voted for Donald Trump. But despite the evident good intentions behind its use, this phrase is more than just a pithy critique; it also functions as an anti-Jewish dogwhistle that promotes long standing stereotypes and misinformation about Jewish culpability in the crucifixion of Jesus.
Jewish and Christian Women in the Ancient Mediterranean — ANCIENT JEW REVIEW
When AJR reached out to see if we (Shayna Sheinfeld, Sara Parks, and Meredith Warren) would be willing to outline why we saw the need for a textbook on ancient Mediterranean religions that did not ignore or compartmentalize Jewish and Christian women, but instead centered them, we jumped at the chance. It was a need–both practical and ethical–that we keenly felt during our first teaching experience.

Unnamed and Uncredited: Anonymous Figures in the Biblical World
Call for Papers Guest Editors Susannah Rees and Ellena Lyell Biblical texts privilege certain voices, such as those of the political elite, and obscures others, such as those of women and workers. This omission of the names of many figures who do not conform to the ideal, high-status male is also found in midrashic literature and the Pseudepigrapha. Names are imbued with great significance and are integral to an individual’s personal identity; thus namelessness is an interpretative strategy.

What Would Jesus Eat This Easter? A First Century Menu for the Last Supper
The Last Supper remains one of the most culturally recognised meals. We are so familiar with the image of Jesus and his disciples sitting around a table. But if you had to put some food on that table, would you know what to serve? All four gospels, Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John, describe Jesus having dinner with his friends just before his arrest and eventual execution. But the gospels are curiously quiet on what was eaten at dinner – after all, one cannot live on bread alone.
Secrets of resurrection in the Bible and 'Game of Thrones'
Events in HBO's Game of Thrones TV series have got people talking about what it means to return from the dead. But while resurrection appears to be a very real possibility for some of the religions of mythical Westeros – not least Jon Snow's resurrector, the "red priestess" Melisandre – what can the Bible add to the discussion? In fact, coming back from the dead was a fairly rare event around the time of Jesus.
