The Music Man | Stage Whispers
The Music Man is a musical with book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson, based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey. Marie Clark Musical Theatre (MCMT) was originally well known for its expertise as singers, but over time has evolved to present, with considerable finesse, the ‘who’s who’ of musicals, this being one of those. In 1957 the show was a hit on Broadway, winning five Tony Awards, and the cast album won the first Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.
A Broadway Memoir With Midwestern Sensibilities
A new book — or, rather, a reprint edition of a not-so-new book — has got me cogitating about the classic Broadway musicals. This, given many of the less than delightful things that one finds oneself compelled to think about these days, is quite a benison. To be sure, although I grew up with the cast albums of many of those evergreen shows and can honestly confess that I love every last one of them, my love isn’t entirely uncritical.
The Music Man | Stage Whispers
In writing one of those ‘perfect’ musicals from Broadway’s Golden Age, composer / lyricist Meredith Willson drew his inspiration for The Music Man from his own musical career, including his time in the 1920s as a member of ‘The March King’ John Philip Soussa’s band - not one of those 76 trombonists, though, but a flute and piccolo virtuoso.

Meredith Willson (Ft. Robert Preston) – Ya Got Trouble
[HAROLD] Friend, either you're closing your eyes To a situation you do not wish to acknowledge Or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated By the presence of a pool table in your community Well, ya got trouble, my friend, right here I say, trouble right here in River City Why, sure, I'm a billiard player Certainly mighty proud I say I'm always mighty proud to say it I consider that the hours I spend With a cue in my hand are golden Help you cultivate horse sense And a cool head...

The making of a musical: What it takes to bring 'The Music Man' to a Tucson stage
Arizona Theatre Company is headed for River City, Iowa. The stage at the Temple of Music and Art will be transformed into that fictional town in the year 1912 for the giddy Meredith Willson musical “The Music Man,” about a flimflam man who jumps off a train in River City and promises a boys band for the price of uniforms and instruments. He has no intention of fulfilling that promise. It opens in previews Dec. 1. When audiences sit down, it will look like the journey to get there was effortless.

Till There Was You
And that's true. It is. On Stuart Varney's show on Friday I even sang the title phrase, somewhat gloatingly, in reference to this (Theresa May has now set the date for the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union, and it looks like I'll be winning by hundred bucks with time to spare). That would be reason enough to celebrate Meredith Willson, the great son of Iowa who wrote "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas".
