Meredith Ochs is an award-winning journalist, broadcaster, author, NPR commentator, deejay, and specialty food judge. She has contributed to numerous print and online publications including INSIDER, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, GRAMMY.com, New York, and Salon.com. Her books include Rock-and-Roll Woman and Aretha: The Queen of Soul (Union Square & Co.). She is an avid sailor, home cook, musician, and photographer. As a culinary judge, I look for high-quality snacks, regional produce, and other staples at Aldi. • I like buying items that contain few or no food additives, like the Specially Selected fruit spread. Over the past few years, I've evaluated hundreds of high-quality products as a judge for the Specialty Foods Association, a membership-based organization for people involved in the specialty foods industry.

Aldi carries a respectable range of cheeses, like bakeable brie, halloumi-style "fries," and Gruyere from Switzerland. The chain also sells seasonal offerings, from Emporium Selection balsamic-onion to black-truffle cheddar. One of my favorites has been the Emporium Selection Champagne cheddar. The English cheese has the pleasant aroma that many brands of Champagne have, and I can even taste the bubbly in it.

Around the holidays, I look for beer variety packs at Costco. Some years, I'll grab Samuel Adams' holiday-themed beer variety pack, which features some of the brand's seasonal brews. In my opinion, this collection is perfect for pleasing several guests at once. It pairs timeworn favorites, from the sweet, malty Old Fezziwig and new, trendy cold IPA (which is fermented at lower-than-normal temperatures) to the hazy Holiday White Ale and mocha-kissed Black Lager.
