1 INTRODUCTION Perception needs to turn fleeting patterns of spiking inputs into knowledge about the body and surrounding world. This challenge is formidable, as most relevant knowledge available to an organism is not trivially contained in the input patterns. For instance, it is not obvious from light rays hitting the retinae to tell if the emitting object is friend or foe or if the emitting object affords to be sittable or walkable (Gibson, 2014; Gregory, 1968).
