1 Introduction Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) [1]. It is a significant cause of preventable blindness, associated with a substantial economic burden and a loss of quality of life [2, 3]. Worldwide, DR affects approximately 22% of people with DM, and 6% of those with DM have sight-threatening DR [4]. There has been substantial progress in the treatment of DR to minimise its progression and prevent vision-threatening complications [5].
