Abstract Contemporary society faces a growing set of complex global issues representing significant human health, well-being, and sustainability threats. Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) has a critical role to play in responding to these issues; however, there remain a set of grand challenges that require resolution. This paper presents and discusses six grand challenges for HFE and related key research thrust areas for each of the challenges.

Abstract Situation awareness (SA) and workload have both received considerable attention over the past several decades. Little research has investigated the relationship between these two constructs however. The present study examines the relationship between workload and SA in a task involving operation of unmanned vehicles performing an inspection task. Overall, an inverse correlation between SA and workload was found, with SA decreasing by approximately 20% as workload increased.

The burgeoning landscape of artificial intelligence represents a sea change in the capability of technology. With this rapid paradigm shift in the making comes a challenge that could not be more urgent: the need to create a high level of synergy between humans and machines. With the surge of consumer-facing AI tools and systems such as ChatGPT and others, we are witnessing the insertion of AI into our lives in one way or another.
