10 Horror Novels That Will Have You Hiding Under The Bed
October is my favorite month. Not just because I get to take out my comfy cardigan collection and an excuse for more coffee, it is because of the spotlight on the horror genre. Horror seems like a collection of Stephen King novels and a few other books. This is far from the truth. There is a lot of gorgeous horror novels that will chill you. Below are some well known, and not so well known horror novels that you might not have looked at. You want ghosts, I got you.
Hungry as the Mirror Bright
Fiction by Micah Dean Hicks Author spotlight She was born a low and needful thing. Hatched down in the tannin dark, dead leaf pillowed, gnashing her mouth in the loam. Burrowing deep where shed buttons and broken boot laces lay. Alone and babbling, prowling for worm-meat and snail-slick in the wet ground rot. Fattened on maggot and grub, she hardened white and lay sarcophagal. Then a second birth, splitting free and strange in new skin.
The Solution To Monster Houses Is Affordable Housing
It was with some amusement that I read Denby Fawcett’s recent piece on monster houses. Amusing because one of the houses cited in the article, and mentioned with disdain in the comments, was 1746 9th Avenue, briefly my home. Not, mind you, as an owner — home ownership for me remains a daydream — but as a tenant. It is this fact that convinces me that monster house critics have no idea what they are talking about.

Recent Protests Raise Concerns About Political Representation
The last year has been a tumultuous one for Hawaii: the protests from Mauna Kea to Kahuku have drawn out sharp and fuzzy divisions have that have long been simmering under the surface. Many view these events as a setback that plays into a narrative of Hawaii being anti-business and antagonistic towards outsiders. Others think it is a long overdue awakening and a reckoning to be rejoiced over. It has been endlessly mowed over as a clash between culture and science; as a blind for Kanaka Maoli vs.
The H Word: On Cruelty
In a recent piece for Vulture (bit.ly/2Gy35VN), Angelica Jade Bastién makes the case that horror shouldn’t be defined by what people find scary but by “the underlying sense of fear, and the exploration of this primal response on personal, cultural, and existential levels.” Her essay is fantastic and does a lot of work to explain what makes the horror genre so interesting and necessary. Bastién’s article made me think a lot about what draws me personally to horror. Fear is certainly a part of it.
Flight of the Crow Boys
Published in Sep. 2019 (Issue 112) | 3625 words © 2014 by Micah Dean Hicks. Originally published in Witness. Reprinted by permission of the author. People around here never wanted our family. Crow boys, they called us, a flock of five brothers and our father, all of us with long black hair. Flapping our over-sized, garage sale sleeves and falling over the fences the neighbors put between us and them. And maybe too because of the feathers.
Has Statehood Actually Worked Out For Hawaii?
Sixty years ago, on Aug. 21, 1959, Hawaii became a state. It was a day that capped decades of work to defeat oligarchs, racists and fearmongers. To some it was the culmination of more than 100 years of consistent American efforts to add Hawaii’s star to the flag. Here in Hawaii, it was met with practically universal celebration. And why not? As a territory, Hawaii had less political autonomy than the 13 colonies before the American Revolutionary War. It had existed under an oligarchy.

For decades, the four plumbers had answered the call of old widows who’d dropped jewelry down their drains. Sometimes, the plumbers unscrewed the U-shaped trap under the sink, knocked out its splat of tobacco-colored crud, and fished out a golden ring. But other times, there was no reclaiming the lost diamonds and gold.
The Deer Boy - Nightmare Magazine

A girl, and the oldest of five. Two brothers and two sisters with howling mouths. Mother sleepwalking from home to work and back. Father was nothing but a flat hand and restless, punishing eyes. They were all noise and need, all shit-kick the dog and eat the last oily handful of lunchmeat from the fridge.
