We plan a big roundup for September. - Michael Barnes 1963: Stube Steakhouse / El Alma Despite being across the street from some of Austin's major activity centers and on one of its high-traffic streets, the corner of Barton Springs Road and Dawson Street was a revolving door of restaurant concepts from 1963 to 2010.
Former Austin mayor Frank Cooksey, progressive champion, dies at 92
Former Austin Mayor Frank Cooksey, champion of civil rights and the environment, died early Monday morning, his daughter confirmed. He was 92. A student body president at the University of Texas during the 1950s, he rode a progressive political wave that began in the 1970s. He served as mayor from 1985 to 1988. According to daughter Kathryn Pew, he suffered a brain bleed, likely the aftermath of a fall. His advance directive recommended no surgery. Cooksey was taken off life support late Sunday.

Chip and Joanna Gaines of "Fixer Upper" TV fame have put their celebrated Texas castle up for sale in Waco. The auction bidding for Cottonland Castle, sometimes called the Waco Castle, will open at 4 p.m., July 20. Stone replicas of European castles are scattered all over the state — at least five can be found in Austin — but this one is dusted with the enchantment of that celebrity couple who is transforming Waco into a national tourist spot.
