Sometimes the best bets are the ones you don't make. I suppose that isn't really a bet in the traditional sense, but rather a bet with your head against your first instinct. I originally had Bears +5.5 vs. Ravens as a pick for this column, but when I went to put pen to paper, I simply couldn't find the words to justify the play. No matter what you think at first blush, always go hunting for the right data to back it up.

We're in a bit of a slump here in Early Lines, going 0-2 for the second straight week. What really rankles me, though, is that we've also whiffed on trying to project which lines would move as the weeks progressed. I can take some solace in the Cardinals/Panthers total sticking at 44.5 last week considering taking the over early in the week was an aggressive bet on Kyler Murray returning. However, the Browns ending up at +2, only to get embarrassed by the Patriots, was unquestionably chastening.

It was an ugly week in this space, with both of our picks falling short. If we're hunting for a silver lining, we can take some solace in the fact that the Texans went from 7-point dogs when we placed the bet to 4-point dogs by kickoff. The last 1.5 points of that came after the Dolphins ruled out Tua Tagovailoa, but we still got 1.5 points by being aggressive early in the week.
