Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

General assignments reporter at a daily newspaper in suburban Dallas.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I took typing in high school and barely got a C.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

By email

Why did you become a journalist?

From an early age, I realized that getting paid to ask questions, have adventures, help people, and write was about as good as it gets.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I wrote sports. Early on, my teacher once suspected I had plagiarized an especially good lede from the big boy paper in town. I had not.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't get in it for the money. Take on as many different assignments as you can early-on to figure out where your passion lies.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Mornings
