Comment: Do we really care about climate change?
A commentary by a former lawyer and political candidate who lives in Victoria. Orange skies and unbreathable air in Toronto followed by massive destruction in Spain and France, and then the recent fires in Spokane, Vernon and other places nearby will have prompted feelings of cognitive dissonance for some Canadians. On the one hand, no one enjoys coughing, stinging eyes, clothes that reek of smoke, or the prospect of losing their homes to wildfire.
Comment: There are limits to your right to protest in the streets
A commentary by a retired lawyer. Recent weeks have seen claims made in Victoria about whether there is a right to hold protests in the streets and whether the city is obligated to facilitate such protests. What does the law say about this? Three sources of law are relevant, namely: Statutes and regulations; common law; and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Victoria Streets and Traffic Bylaw (No. 09-079). S.

The Town And The City Festival Boasts A Fantastic Lineup
When I was growing up in Massachusetts, if you'd told me Lowell would host one of the coolest music and art festivals, I would have laughed. Anyone would have laughed. Lowell, back then, was a place largely to be avoided. The city has changed quite a bit in the last few decades, those changes for the better, and has become a really nice spot. Lowell is now celebrating its bicentennial.

Comment: Complicated Indigenous land issues have deep roots
A commentary. Doherty practised law in British Columbia for 35 years, including 18 years acting on behalf of the Crown in Aboriginal law cases, and wrote his PhD thesis on Aboriginal land rights in Canada. It is commendable that Hamar Foster has written two pieces for the Times Colonist (Aug. 30, Oct. 14) attempting to shed light on the recent Cowichan decision that — if upheld on appeal — could negate much of the land title system by which British Columbians hold private property.

CT Investors ... curious what you're looking to purchaseCT Investors ... curious what you're looking to purchase
@Bob Prisco the biggest issues in this part of the country... taxes. A $200k house making good rental income looks awesome. Add in some will have $10-12,000 annual property tax. Now that deal is probably a dud. It affects flipping as well. I’m running numbers on a CT property now and I’m amazed. It never occurred to me, but the title insurance I had on my last NY deal was 6-7 times MORE than it is as I crunch my CT deal. Thousands of dollars more for title insurance you will almost never use.

A genome-wide association analysis reveals new pathogenic pathways in gout* - Nature Genetics
|
Abstract Gout is a chronic disease that is caused by an innate immune response to deposited monosodium urate crystals in the setting of hyperuricemia. Here, we provide insights into the molecular mechanism of the poorly understood inflammatory component of gout from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 2.6 million people, including 120,295 people with prevalent gout. We detected 377 loci and 410 genetically independent signals (149 previously unreported loci in urate and gout).

Secular trend of gout incidence in the UK: an age-period-cohort analysis
Discussion Using a nationally representative general population sample in the UK, we found that the effect of the birth cohort on the risk of incident gout between 1999 and 2013 differed from that between 2011 and 2019. The risk of incident gout increased monotonically from the early to the late birth cohorts between 1999 and 2013. However, an inverse association was observed between 2011 and 2019.

New Music Venue Opens In Gloucester, MA
I’ve spent a portion of my summers in Gloucester since I was a kid. It’s where my brother and I collected sea glass, and where I learned to skip stones across the water’s surface. It is also was where I once came within two feet of a shark after squid had washed ashore, and where the cove once filled with jellyfish. But I don’t recall ever seeing a concert there. That is going to change. A restaurant and music venue called The Cut opened yesterday. Well, the restaurant portion opened.

Both bands have been around for decades (they’ve combined to release 48 full-lengths), both have had documentaries made about them, and both deliver delightful original music with unusual lyrical content.

I See Hawks In L.A. at CSUN Art Gallery, 4-23-22 Concert Review
The fun began during the soundcheck, when Paul Marshall played a bit of the Skeeter Davis song “The End Of The World.” He then led the group into some of “I’m Blue, I’m Lonesome.” And then when everything was right, they played “A Dog Can Break Your Heart,” saying it was for a woman in the audience who had brought her dog to the show. This song features such beautiful harmonies, something this band is known for. It’s from the band’s first album, released more than twenty years ago.
