What was your first job as a journalist?
Covered spectrum of database management systems tools market for San Diego-based Advisor Media.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, IBM Selectric.
How is social media changing news?
It's making it way too easy to disseminate bad information, especially when people start digesting news from uncredentialed sources.

What does it mean to be a journalist?
It's getting a better understanding of what we believe our fellow humans want to know, even in IT/software development....
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email all day every day.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
The basics: Microsoft Word, Google Search, Google Analytics, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, SiteCore CMS...
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram -- because of its limiting features, you have to get creative with it. I've probably clicked more ads on it....
Who do you wish followed you?
I'd be excited if Annie Leibovitz followed my Insta.
Why did you become a journalist?
Fell into it; got a job at a company providing DBMS software, who also had the crazy idea to start a magazine and they needed writers.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was a photographer, of course!
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Writing Microsoft Certified Professional Salary Surveys provided the highest exposure for our sites for many years, as well as revenue.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Become a subject matter expert in whatever you cover.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Email any day any time.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
I covered IT and software development, so the pitches tend to be boring ones. My job was to make any bad pitch palatable.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I've never seen a pitch from a software or information systems company that was written with any knowledge of the product. Ever.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee, the journalist's second drink of choice (I don't drink alcohol)

The Atlantic
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Because my beat was mainly Microsoft, people think I've met Bill Gates or worked in Seattle, both of which never happened.
