Wavyleaf Basketgrass (Oplismenus undulatifolius) Invasion is Associated with Changes in Soil Microbial Communities
Abstract Introduced invasive plants can alter the composition of resident soil microbial communities, which may disrupt ecosystem function and facilitate continued invasion success. Wavyleaf basketgrass (Oplismenus undulatifolius) is a high-risk, non-native invasive plant currently confined to the Mid-Atlantic United States but with the potential to colonize forest understory across the eastern United States.
Differentiation of the Foliar Microbiomes From Co-Occurring Grass Species Reflects Their Recency of Invasion
Non-native invasive plant species interact with diverse microbes during the course of their introduction, establishment, and spread. These interactions may either facilitate or inhibit invasion success (Hardoim et al. 2015; Trognitz et al. 2016) and are therefore relevant to the management of invasive plants considered to be weeds (Cheng et al. 2022; Fulcher et al. 2024).
Cryptic functional diversity within a grass mycobiome
PLOS ONE, Jul 2023 Eukaryotic hosts harbor tremendously diverse microbiomes that affect host fitness and response to environmental challenges. Fungal endophytes are prominent members of plant microbiomes, but we lack information on the diversity in functional traits affecting their interactions with their host and environment.
Temporal variability in nutrient use among Streptomyces suggests dynamic niche partitioning
INTRODUCTION Competition for resources shapes the dynamics of microbial communities. Microbial populations have evolved diverse strategies to mediate competitive interactions and facilitate coexistence including resource partitioning, spatial structure and extracellular signalling (Niehaus et al., 2019).
Mental Health Needs to be a Priority in Foster Care
Youth Voice writer Michael Fulcher. Courtesy of Fulcher. To be a foster youth or former foster youth is to experience and deal with trauma. Imagine being pulled away from everything you knew as a child. Going into foster care means living in a strange new home or facility, meeting strange new people, going to a new school, and having new hoops to jump through.

Racism is a Familiar Fear
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. Racism and inequality have plagued this nation for hundreds of years. Racism here in the South is a familiar fear.
In My Community, You Don’t Call the Cops
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. Although I now live in Harlem, I grew up in Ridgewood, New York, a small, immigrant neighborhood where the adults often left the children to fend for themselves as they ventured into the city for work. There was one local precinct, though I don’t remember ever really seeing a heavy police presence. I wouldn’t describe Ridgewood as particularly dangerous.
Our Whole System Must Change
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. I took interest in social justice after being exposed to protesting. I was only 15 years old in 2016 when Philando Castile was murdered by the police during a routine traffic stop in my city. I couldn’t understand what motivated an individual to commit such a horrendous act. I began to research other fatal police encounters with minorities and was utterly despaired at the information I found.
When the Thin Blue Line Breaks: Racial Divide in America
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. From a young age, we are taught that the men in blue are our friends, protectors and allies. We put our faith and trust into the familiar uniforms that are responsible for our collective and individual safety and find solace in knowing that they will be there when we need them. The American system has been brought up on this premise of self-governance run by the people, with the people and for the people.
My Human Rights Were Stripped
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. Racism, sexism and police brutality have been a constant in my life. I remember from a very young age the cops would harass me, constantly trying to find any reason to make an arrest. I could not remember a time when I was not faced with the biased opinions and hatred of the police department. One of my oldest memories is of police officers surrounding a small, frail 12-year-old me.
Protesting Matters
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. I have always dealt with racial inequality and police harassment. When I was 15 I used to have blue hair, and my foster sister had red hair. One day the police rolled up on us and told us – didn’t even say hi, just told us – what gangs we were from.
Abolishing the Police Is Not the Answer
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. This year, 2020, has been hard for everyone; between coronavirus and fighting for equality, the world hasn’t had a moment to stop and breathe. Without a doubt, this year has been full of tragedy and sorrow as the number of lives lost continues to grow.
Broadening Participation in Scientific Conferences during the Era of Social Distancing
Virtual conferences can offer significant benefits but require considerable planning and creativity to be successful. Here we describe the successes and failures of a hybrid in-person/virtual conference model. The COVID-19 epidemic presents the scientific community with an opportunity to pioneer novel models that effectively engage virtual participants to advance conference goals.
Diabetes Adds Risk in Coronavirus Age
Living with diabetes, Michael Fulcher’s compromised immune system puts him at greater risk if he gets sick with COVID-19. Photo courtesy of Michael Fulcher Many people are being affected by this current pandemic, and some are being more affected than others. We all know the problems that the elderly and the medically fragile are facing during this crisis, but we tend not to think about another group that is at risk, which is older and former foster youth.
