Opinion: Dereliction of an oath of office
U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, speaks at a get out the vote event held at farm in Palmer, Alaska, on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026.
OPINION: Federal management is failing the Bering Sea
The Bering Sea ecosystem is in crisis. Salmon, halibut, and crab stocks are in steep decline, and people who rely on them to put up food for the winter or as income are being asked to do without. Meanwhile, for the largest, most wasteful and most politically connected fishery in Alaska’s cold, northern waters, it’s business as usual.
The cost of a fish sandwich: Why we need to reduce bycatch by Alaska’s trawl fleet
By Krystalynn Nasisaq Scott, David Bayes and Michael Kampnich Updated: 1 minute ago Published: 19 minutes ago Louis Immamak, standing in his empty smokehouse in Emmonak, said he believes commercial fishing trawlers that catch chum salmon as bycatch, are damaging salmon returns on the Yukon River on August 10, 2021. (Marc Lester / ADN) For decades, the North Pacific trawl fleet has dumped millions of pounds of salmon, halibut, sablefish and crab while targeting pollock, sole and flounder.
Fisheries managers should reverse course on censoring public comments
The North Pacific Fisheries Management Council process is difficult to navigate. It is a world of acronyms, statistics and legal jargon; but decisions made there impact the lives of all Alaskans, and directly affect allocations of federally-managed species — including king salmon and halibut — to Indigenous, sport and commercial stakeholders. Meetings occur over weeks and can last more than 10 hours per day. It requires significant time to participate, time the average Alaskan does not have.
Commentary: Not all fishermen support Sullivan
By Michael Kampnich and Tyson Fick For The Cordova Times We encourage independent-minded fishermen to support independent candidate Dr. Al Gross. United Fishermen of Alaska’s recent endorsement of Sen. Dan Sullivan for the U.S. Senate is unfortunately a short-sighted and politically cautious view. It would also be a mistake for Alaskans to think that the United Fishermen of Alaska actually speaks for all fishermen in our great state.
