How Much Does It Cost Top Legacy Funders to Give Away Their Money?

How much should a foundation spend to give away a dollar? Or to make a grant? One does not have to look farther than America’s two largest legacy funders — the Lilly Endowment and the Ford Foundation — to see the fundamental challenges in answering such questions. Lilly grants two and a half times more than Ford, but has one-fifth the staff. Ford has one-fourth the assets of Lilly, yet makes twice as many grants.
