Alfred Tennyson hated biographies. The ‘desiring of anecdotes and acquaintance with the lives of great men was treating them like pigs to be ripped open for the public’ he fumed, grimly anticipating his own dissection.1 He chided people who wished to see In Memoriam A.H.H. (1850) as a transparent statement of his love affair with Arthur Hallam, ‘for I never even called him “dear”’.

What Was History’s Deadliest Era?

One of the first Europeans to try out slave trading failed dismally at it. In 1510, the Portuguese freebooter Dom Francisco de Almeida landed at the Cape of Good Hope and tried to capture some of the Khoekhoe people. He was wrong to put faith in his firepower. The arquebuses lugged around by his men were so cumbersome that they required a prop to aim, and cooperative victims who posed to be shot at. Heavy rain extinguished the smoldering wicks required to fire them.

People have never liked lectures from know-it-alls. When the Roman authorities handed over the Christian grammarian Cassian of Imola to his pagan pupils for punishment, they stabbed him to death with the pens they had used in his classes. Arnoud Visser considers Cassian’s macabre end to be emblematic of the hostility intellectuals have attracted throughout the history of the West, especially when they have dared to correct mistakes or challenge received ideas.
