Agreement of cooperation on spaceport reached witth Mexico

Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls and others visited Mexico about two weeks ago to receive support for the Yuma Spaceport from partners across the border. Nicholls was on the agenda to present the spaceport and the progress of where they are at, which he did during the economic development subcommittee. Nicholls said he provided a full update, and the next day the joint statement was signed to agree to work together to build the U.S. spaceport with cooperation from the Mexico government.

Yuma's connection to the Declaration of Independence

Yuma has a direct connection to the July 4, 1776, signing of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Nelson Jr., who was a significant figure in the American Revolution, was one of the 56 delegates to the Second Continental Congress representing the 13 colonies who signed the Declaration of Independence. Former Yuma Mayor Lawrence Nelson, who served from 2003-2009, is the sixth-generation great-grandson of Thomas Nelson.

For the last 35 years, Howard Blitz has been teaching residents about the United States Constitution and economics. It’s only fitting that the founder and director of the Freedom Library hosted a special 250th Independence Day Celebration at the Historic Yuma Theatre. Blitz has been holding classes for 30 years at the Freedom Library, where participants who write essays attending could be awarded up to two $1,000 scholarships.
