Steering open-source AI to accelerate the sustainable development goals
|
While the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution is advancing rapidly, the open-source paradigm offers key pathways and potential risks for accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and beyond. This comment introduces four governance actions that consider how sustainability, evaluation, safety, and cooperation can be integrated into the transformation of open-source AI, thereby reducing uncertainties and challenges posed by open-source AI for sustainable global prosperity.

Limiting future warming reduces drought exposure for terrestrial vertebrates
Abstract Ambitious conservation efforts are needed to curb biodiversity loss as drought severity intensifies globally. Here, we assess the exposure of resident terrestrial vertebrates within global biodiversity hotspots to drought severity surpassing the extremes experienced during their pre-industrial history.
Can China’s Great Green Wall shape efforts to keep the world’s deserts at bay?
About 40% of the world’s land surface is classed as drylands1 — deserts and water-scarce grasslands, shrublands and savannahs. Life can be tough for the more than two billion people that live there. In Chinguetti, Mauritania, Saharan dunes push into streets and courtyards, burying homes and forcing residents to move to other towns. In Mongolia, a lack of rainfall is placing immense pressure on herders and ecosystems, and sending dust and sandstorms across the border into China and South Korea2.
The dual impact of trade on the water–energy–food nexus globally
Abstract Global trade underpins sustainable development by linking water, energy and food across distant regions, yet how it reshapes transboundary synergies and trade-offs within this nexus remains poorly understood. Here, by constructing water–energy–food (WEF) networks that integrate cross-border resource flows, we quantify trade-driven changes in the WEF nexus, contrasting actual trade with counterfactual no-trade scenarios.

Climate change is predicted to reduce global belowground ecosystem multifunctionality - Nature Communications
Abstract Although climate change is known to abruptly shift ecosystem functions in drylands worldwide, the global response of belowground ecosystem multifunctionality (BEMF) to future climate change remains largely unknown. Herein, we use fifteen indicators associated with key ecosystem functions (e.g., belowground productivity, nutrient pools and cycling) to evaluate global BEMF by averaging, principal component analysis, and single-threshold approaches.
Global coastal water clarity has increased due to human intervention - Communications Earth & Environment
Abstract Climate change and human activity are reshaping coastal systems, yet global impacts on water clarity remain poorly quantified. Here we leverage remote sensing big data to develop a global model of coastal suspended particulate matter across continental coastal waters, and show that global coastal suspended particulate matter concentrations have declined by 0.28 mg L−1 annually since 2000, driven by natural processes and human intervention.
Wet-hot days increased faster than dry-hot days during the warm season in Chinese cities over the past four decades - Communications Earth & Environment
Abstract As global urbanization accelerates, its potential impact on compound temperature-humidity extremes has become a critical concern for sustainable urban development. Here we examine spatiotemporal trends and urbanization effects on dry-hot and wet-hot extremes during the warm season (May-September) across 136 Chinese cities from 1981 to 2022.

Collaboration between artificial intelligence and Earth science communities for mutual benefit - Nature Geoscience
Artificial intelligence is rapidly being integrated into Earth science, but how Earth science may benefit artificial intelligence has been overlooked. We call for mutual balancing between the two disciplines and improving cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Urban flood risk management needs nature-based solutions: a coupled social-ecological system perspective - npj Urban Sustainability
Abstract A growing number of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) has been advocated for urban flood risk management (FRM). However, whether NbS for FRM (NbS-FRM) achieves both social and ecological co-benefits remains largely unknown. We here propose and use a conceptual framework with a coupled social-ecological perspective to explore and identify such “win-win” potential in NbS-FRM.

Factors Influencing Four Decades of Forest Change in Guizhou Province, China
Abstract : Globally, the loss of forest vegetation is a significant concern due to the crucial roles that forests play in the Earth’s system, including the provision of ecosystem services, participation in biogeochemical cycles, and support for human well-being. Forests are especially critical in mountains environments, where deforestation can lead to accelerated biodiversity loss, soil erosion, flooding, and reduced agricultural productivity, as well as increased poverty rates.
MOSSLEY POINT SECURES NPL SAFETY
City of Liverpool and Mossley played out an entertaining 0-0 draw on Sunday, as Paul McNally’s side secured the point they needed to achieve NPL West Division safety this season. It was a similar tale to Wednesday night’s agonising draw with Runcorn Linnets, as the Purps were much the better side throughout – only this time the opposition were indebted to an incredible performance from their goalkeeper (who you’ll be hearing a lot about in this report).
Widespread global disparities between modelled and observed mid-depth ocean currents - Nature Communications
Argo displacements dataset Calculation of 1000-m current velocities from Argo floats relies on measurement of displacement, which is the difference between the location of the last surface-fixed position before departure from the sea surface and the first fixed position after arrival at the sea surface, together with the time interval, typically 9–10 days20,33,60,61. For observations, in this study we use the ANDRO (Argo New Displacements Rannou and Ollitrault) displacements59.
