Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. My romanticised ideas of typewriting a memoir by a lake were torn to shreds. They are insanely inefficient. Maybe it was my technique.

How is social media changing news?

It encourages clickability over quality, shock over substance. But change isn't inherently bad. The best will learn how to succeed.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Perd Hapley from Parks and Recreation. No contest.

What's your favorite social network?

I'm still a sucker for Instagram, but I'm doing what I can to wean myself off algorithms. App time limits seem effective (so far).

Who do you wish followed you?

I'll stick with fellow writers. Op-ed: George Monbiot, John Naughton, Katharine Murphy. Sports: Gideon Haigh, Jonathon Liew, Barney Ronay.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm most proud of the thing that started it all: my original travel blog, which told a few stories that had never been told before.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I'm an early riser and an early finisher. Your best bet is lunchtime, by which time I've usually knocked over most of my work for the day.

What's your favorite drink?

If the beard hasn't already given the game away, I like to start my night with a craft beer (NEIPA or Oat Cream IPA), and finish with shiraz.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Getting active in the sun: cycling, beach walks, shooting hoops, soaking up that sweet, sweet ultraviolet radiation however I can.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

At the risk of revealing my political leanings I enjoy the depth of insight offered by The Guardian.
