Saying good-bye to a family who never set out to lead - The Riverdale Press
You might say that, at one point, I became obsessed with flagpoles. Not any old flagpole, mind you. One in particular next to the Riverdale Monument that had decades of history behind it. And if someone didn’t do something about it soon, the flagpole itself would be history.

Watching life move too fast
I never really thought of myself as being the product of a large family until much later in life. When I was growing up, most knew only of my younger sister, Renee. Maybe an older brother or an older sister. But in reality, I have six brothers and sisters, which is hard to fathom — especially since I didn’t grow up with most of them. And we only have time to blame for that.
Trends come and go, and then come right back again - The Riverdale Press
All I had to do was pick up a package that had been left at the wrong door. I knocked. My neighbor let me in. Nothing felt out of the ordinary. But then it happened. It was like raindrops hitting a tin roof, but it wasn’t raining, and we weren’t under a tin roof. I followed the sound, and set my sights on something that hasn’t been in front of my eyes for at least a couple decades. It was a typewriter. An electric one, to be exact.

Joseph Lieberman: A proud Jew and a pathbreaker with integrity - The Jewish Star
When Al Gore chose Joe Lieberman as his Democratic vice presidential running mate in 2000, it was a gamechanger for Jews in America as, for the first time, a Jewish candidate was on a major party ticket to lead the country. “I don’t know if any presidential nominee would have had the courage to do it 20 years, let alone 50 years, before,” said Lieberman, who died last Wednesday at the age of 82 from complications due to a fall at his home in Riverdale.
Giving the gift of life, one synagogue at a time - The Riverdale Press
Posted Friday, March 15, 2024 10:56 pm It was a busy day at Hebrew Institute of Riverdale recently as the New York Blood Center came to town looking for donors. And there were plenty who gave and even volunteered like, from left, top donor Rabbi Moshe Edelman, Magen David Adom overseas volunteers Daniel Kopstick and Rachel Orloff, blood center account manager Natasha Chattar, Rabbi Steven Exler, top donor Daniel Padwa, and in front, Orloff’s therapy dog Charlie.
'George was a character, to say the least' - The Riverdale Press
Posted Friday, March 15, 2024 11:12 pm A U.S. Marine shares a rare moment of vulnerability during Memorial Day services in 1991 in front of a nursing home on Cannon Place in Kingsbridge Heights — a moment George Gutierrez, then a staff photographer for The Riverdale Press, was sure to capture. George M. Gutierrez/file It was art that brought Romina Carrillo and George Gutierrez together for the first time, but it almost didn’t happen.
A plan to save The Johnsonburg Press
Phil Graham — likely known more as the husband to legendary Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham than his own work — once famously described newspapers as a “rough draft of history.” But, in what has become a far too common refrain, newspapers themselves are becoming history. More than 3,000 newspapers have disappeared from communities since 2004, according to Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, and more will surely follow.
Tracy Shelton stepping down as KRVC leader - The Riverdale Press
Posted Tuesday, March 12, 2024 1:47 pm Tracy McCabe Shelton, center, is stepping down from her longtime role as executive director of Kingsbridge Riverdale Van Cortlandt Development Corp., in June. Julius Constantine Motal/file Laura Levine-Pinedo will step in as interim executive director of KRVC in July.
Keeping the mystery in love worth the price - The Riverdale Press
Forget scary movies or the end of the world — what scares almost all of us the most, by far, is getting a voicemail from a family member, telling you to call back right away because “it’s important.” My 90-year-old father did that earlier this month, a message I got on my phone as I was walking from what had been an enlightening and productive meeting with a school superintendent. The last several months had been filled with difficult calls like this. My mother’s cancer. My stepmother’s passing.

Kinex says broadband project back on track in Lunenburg County
Published 8:34 am Thursday, January 4, 2024 Despite the occasional hiccup, the $25 million effort by Kinex to lay nearly 1,200 miles of fiber optic cable in Lunenburg and across the region remains on-track. And when it’s done, the access to high-speed internet in many neighborhoods across Lunenburg, Prince Edward and Cumberland counties could make working from home not just a remnant of the coronavirus pandemic, but the norm.
A time to listen: Buckingham politicians discuss issues at town hall
Published 7:24 am Wednesday, December 27, 2023 Buckingham politicians asked questions, answered others and generally talked with residents during their December town hall meeting. In a matter of days, Paul Garrett will succeed Jordan Miles as Maysville’s representative on the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors. And it wasn’t something Garrett — a retired schoolteacher — ever thought he’d find himself doing.
Discovering the magic of Christmas, one tree at a time - Farmville
Published 12:41 am Sunday, December 24, 2023 It seems everyone knows the story of Charlie Brown making his way to a practically deserted Christmas tree lot, finding nothing but a small sapling with barely any branches. “I guess you were right, Linus,” Charlie said to his trusted friend. “I shouldn’t have picked this little tree. Everything I do turns into a disaster.
The one man not laughing over George Santos
Posted Sunday, December 17, 2023 3:35 pm All eyes — at least in the political world — are on the congressional special election in February to fill the seat that, until last week, was held by the now-expelled George Santos.
A love and a smile beyond dementia
Op-Ed Posted Thursday, December 7, 2023 12:20 pm I’ll never forget the last time I saw my stepmother, even though by then she’d already forgotten me. It was last year in the Florida hospice center Helen had lived in since before the coronavirus pandemic, when she required round-the-clock care that my father — back then pushing 90 himself — could no longer provide. At first it was a missed meal, a forgotten hair appointment. But then Helen would forget to take her insulin.
Prince Edward County schools focus on new character program
Published 1:14 am Friday, December 1, 2023 Just five minutes. That’s all teachers in Prince Edward County will need to educate public school students on a commonly overlooked topic: character. “We talked about ways to address post-COVID, post-pandemic behaviors as they were — and are — continuing to escalate,” Prince Edward County school board chair Lucy Carson told her colleagues during a recent meeting. “This was just one spoke of the wheel, and a way we could address it.
Luminary celebrates life — at a place you wouldn’t’ expect - Farmville
Published 10:32 pm Friday, November 24, 2023 Fancy cars, boats, maybe even a zoo. There are countless things someone approaching retirement could be interested in buying. But for William Barrett, there was just one thing he wanted: a cemetery. But not just any old cemetery. He specifically wanted Trinity Memorial Gardens off Prince Edward Highway. And for good reason. “Go to any cemetery, and you’ll see row after row after row of stone,” Barrett said.
Kimbrough model train world on-track for another holiday season
Published 4:47 pm Friday, November 17, 2023 There was a time when Christmas wasn’t complete until you made a pilgrimage to Bevell’s Hardware in Blackstone to see what felt like miles and miles of model railroad tracks and scenery. Something similar is happening now in Farmville, when it comes to the Kimbrough model train world.
Model train world on-track for another holiday season - Farmville
Published 4:47 pm Friday, November 17, 2023 There was a time when Christmas wasn’t complete until you made a pilgrimage to Bevell’s Hardware in Blackstone to see what felt like miles and miles of model railroad tracks and scenery. For more than four decades, the store would welcome thousands of visitors throughout the holiday season — some traveling a good distance — just to get a look at as many as 12 trains running at once through intricately detailed model towns and forests.
Sands Coliseum project can move forward for now, after appeal court's stay
Las Vegas Sands can continue to move forward with its plans for a $4 billion commercial redevelopment at the Nassau Coliseum — at least for now. An appellate judge stayed a ruling Thursday by Supreme Court Judge Sakira Kapoor that Nassau County improperly noticed meetings where it was considering transferring a 99-year lease for the former Uniondale sports complex, pending a hearing just before Thanksgiving.
Judge forces Sands to start over on Coliseum lease takeover
The redevelopment of the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale just took a detour after a New York State Supreme Court judge ruled a lease the Las Vegas Sands signed with Nassau County wasn't valid, and both sides would have to start the process over again.

‘Hunger in America is the ultimate obscenity’
Op-Ed Posted Thursday, October 26, 2023 1:19 pm My parents were worried the moment I laid eyes on the apartment for the very first time. It was the entire top floor of a car dealership just off what would eventually become Interstate 86, at the edge of the Finger Lakes region upstate. This would be my first apartment — my first home outside the family home where I grew up in Pennsylvania. But that’s not why my parents were concerned.
How do you bring more doctors here - Kenbridge Victoria Dispatch
Published 8:00 am Friday, October 13, 2023 Lunenburg County needs more doctors. That part isn’t in dispute. It’s also not alone in that need. In Nottoway, Prince Edward, Charlotte and the surrounding counties, you’ll find the same problem and the same question. What’s being done to fix it? Part of that answer comes through a regional project, set up with funding from the state.
Prosecutors expand case against Santos with new charges
U.S. Rep. George Santos is facing even more criminal counts in federal court, as prosecutors expand their wire fraud case against him. The U.S. Attorney Breon Peace has added 10 more counts to the case he's building against the embattled congressman, adding to the 13 Santos was previously indicted on last May. Back then Santos was accused of wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and making materially false statements to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Why won't the state approve a 1% tax for Prince Edward County?
Published 3:56 am Friday, September 29, 2023 FARMVILLE – The question seems like an easy one. After all, eight other counties and a city in Virginia have asked the same question and been told yes. In Virginia, a city or county has to get permission from the General Assembly to increase sales tax. First the Assembly has to pass a bill, then local residents have to vote on it in the next election. That seems simple enough.

Part two will be in next weeks edition. The notice showed up in the final version of the General Assembly’s budget. Neither Sen. Frank Ruff or Del. Tommy Wright can say where it came from, as both claim they didn’t ask for it to be added.

Nassau remembers those taken on 9/11
It’s been 22 years since our world changed forever when our nation was attacked. But for so many like Susan Hutchins, it still feels like Sept. 11, 2001 — the day she lost her son, West Hempstead’s Kevin Nathaniel Colbert, in the South Tower of the World Trade Center. “Kevin was an amazing brother, nephew, godson, cousin and friend,” Hutchins told the crowd that gathered at Eisenhower Park’s Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre for Nassau County’s 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. “Today is so unsettling.
A glimpse into the heart - The Riverdale Press
It was dated June 10, 1927, written from a home no longer standing at Exchange Street in Rochester, to a young woman in Ellicottville named Lola. “I am not driving taxi now. I quit Sunday night. Monday morning, I went to work again for the Salvation Army. Am not driving truck this time, but am helping on a wagon. I hope to get back on a truck again soon, but I am satisfied to get three square meals a day, and a bed to sleep in.” Lola, by the way, is my grandmother.
City prepares for possible school bus driver strike on first day of classes - The Riverdale Press
If New York City school bus drivers go on strike before classes start Sept. 7, city officials say they’re ready. The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181 — which represents some 9,000 drivers across the five boroughs — says its members could walk off the job as early as next week. If it does, it would be the first citywide school bus driver strike in a decade. “Drivers, attendants and shop employees simply cannot make ends meet,” Local 1181 president Tomas Fret told CBS News in a statement.
Districts deal with state delays - The Charlotte Gazette
Districts deal with state delays Published 11:21 am Friday, July 28, 2023 By Michael Hinman The Charlotte Gazette It’s late July. The sun is shining. Families are enjoying time away. Schools are preparing for the return of students in just a few weeks. And there’s just one question hanging in the air: Where is the state budget? And as the weeks pass by without one in place, what impact is that having on local schools?
BOCES superintendent Robert Dillon dies at 72
The Nassau BOCES educational community is mourning the loss of its leader after superintendent Robert Dillon died Friday following complications from spinal surgery. He was 72. Dillon - who lived in both Walden in Orange County, as well as Plainview here on Long Island - has led the Board of Cooperative Educational Services since 2015. He took the job with a focus on Common Core State Standards, which had raised considerable controversy at the time leading up to his appointment.

Schools are preparing for the return of students in just a few weeks. And there’s just one question hanging in the air: Where is the state budget? If that was a question on a quiz in one of his Cumberland County schools classrooms, Dr. Chip Jones knows not a single state lawmaker could answer it correctly.
Homeless man dies after assault - The Riverdale Press
By Eric Harvey and Michael Hinman A homeless man was killed, and another is in custody after a street brawl turned deadly in Kingsbridge last week. Police say they found Richard Roberts, 52, with multiple stab wounds at West 236th Street and Broadway just after midnight on Friday, June 30, following a 911 call reporting an assault in progress. Roberts was rushed to New York Presbyterian-Allen Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Officials look to increase intake at Prince Edward County landfill
Officials look to increase intake at Prince Edward County landfill Published 10:47 pm Thursday, July 6, 2023 If a request is approved, Prince Edward County would nearly double the amount of trash it’s allowed to take in at the landfill. Officials are calling the move simply a way to manage its busiest days, and those who live and work around the State Route 648 facility won’t even know the difference. Nearby residents, however, just see the potential for increased traffic, among other things.

When will state budget be finished? - The Charlotte Gazette
When will state budget be finished? Published 8:30 am Thursday, June 22, 2023 It won’t be easy, but Virginia will have a state budget finalized before the month is out. At least that is if Frank Ruff has anything to say about it. And as the leading Republican on the state Senate’s finance committee, Ruff has a lot to say about it. The current budget impasse “won’t continue,” the senator said, “because everybody wants to get it behind us.

Have you applied for a microgrant? Published 12:51 pm Sunday, June 11, 2023 By Michael Hinman The Farmville Herald School may be over, but that doesn’t mean your child is finished learning. A new state program can help pay for any extra tutoring needed for struggling students. Parents still have a little time left to apply to the state for a K-12 Learning Acceleration grant — a newly minted program championed by Gov.
Apartment building could tower over Broadway - The Riverdale Press
There’s nowhere to go but up … at least in Kingsbridge. Siblings Maryam and Mohammed Yaghoubi are ready to construct a building 13 stories above the 1 train on Broadway near West 231st Street, turning the former site of Mr. McGoo’s Pub and a neighboring parking garage into more than 225 affordable apartments. “Reading what the highest requirements are for our community in the Riverdale area, it’s housing, housing, housing,” Mohammed Yaghoubi told Community Board 8’s land use committee on Monday.
Santos must reveal who posted his bond
U.S. Rep. George Santos must reveal who helped him post a $500,000 surety bond to stay out of jail in his fraud and money laundering case. But the judge hearing his criminal case on Long Island has held off enforcing that order for now, so that Santos can appeal. Magistrate Judge Anne Shields issued the order Tuesday, according to court documents, with a deadline of noon Friday to file an appeal in an attempt to ultimately block her order.
Living in a world after the coronavirus - The Riverdale Press
The country officially returned to normal on May 11 with the end of the federal public health emergency surrounding Covid-19 — but for many, it’s been pretty close to normalcy for months. Virtually no one asks for proof of vaccination. Masks, while occasionally seen, have found themselves primarily back on the faces of medical professionals. And the floor markings intended to help people put six feet of distance from their neighbors have almost faded into time.
The George Santos of then, now, and what might've been
He called us the "Herald Firing Squad." That was fair, I guess. When Republican congressional candidate George Santos first visited our Garden City office last fall, there were nine reporters - including me - sitting around the conference table waiting for him. This time, however, it was just three of us. A senior editor, Laura Lane. A senior reporter, Michael Malaszczyk. And me. We didn't meet on Long Island. Instead, we traveled to Queens where now-U.S. Rep.
Peter King debuts new opinion column
Not even retirement can slow down Peter King. After 28 years in the U.S. House - including a two-year stint as chair of the House Homeland Security Committee - as well as more than two decades serving on both the Hempstead town council and as Nassau County comptroller, King finds himself busier than ever. He's working with a Washington law firm, and does consulting work for Northwell Health.
Ritchie Torres goes on offensive vs. ‘liar’ George Santos
Bad News For Biden As Georgia's Marjorie Taylor-Greene Threatens To Impeach Him This 2023 What is going on in the United States? Why the frequent threat to impeach anyone that assumes the office of the president. Why are those at the helm of affairs allowing corruption to ruin the reputation of the country. Apparently, the devil has shown the seed of corruption deep down the soul of our leaders.
Santos admits to 'embellishing my resume,' vows to still take oath
U.S. Rep.-elect George Santos admits some of the claims he's made about his past were not true, but says he's determined to be sworn in as the next congressman representing parts of Nassau County and Queens next week. "I'm not going to make excuses for this, but a lot of people overstate their resumes, or twist a little bit, or 'ingrandiate' themselves," Santos told WABC-AM hosts John Catsimatidis and Anthony Weiner on Monday. "I'm not saying I'm not guilty of that.
