Book Review: ‘Surreal,’ by Michèle Gerber Klein
SURREAL: The Extraordinary Life of Gala Dalí, by Michèle Gerber Klein What is the value of a muse? That’s the central question of Michèle Gerber Klein’s biography of Gala Dalí, “Surreal.” Dalí was known as “the Mother of Surrealism,” the wife of Salvador, an adviser, a seductress. But as with so many influential women, her role was deliberately unseen. She was born Elena Ivanovna Diakonova, outside Moscow, in either 1890 or 1894 — depending on whose story you believe.

Ashkenazi Jews in the shtetl believed that proud talk when a pregnancy barely was established would invite catastrophe. Like other Jews, they feared the evil eye, expecting it to do harm when their affairs were prospering. In contrast, Sephardic Jews often have celebrated a first pregnancy.
Lore Segal by Han Ong
This interview is featured, along with thirty-four others, in our anthology BOMB: The Author Interviews. Ilka Weissnix, fleeing Hitler’s Europe, lands in America and promptly falls in love with a disaffected black intellectual at least two decades her senior. This odd-duck affair, by turns thrilling and frustrating, is how she learns to become American, and it gives an idea of her creator Lore Segal’s striking gift for askew juxtaposition and reversal.
IN MEMORIAM Rene Ricard (1946 2014)
Growing up in Lowell, Mass., I often took the train to Boston to visit Gordon Cairnie’s Grolier Poetry Bookshop in Harvard Square, hoping to encounter an authentic poet. Harvard and Inman Squares in Cambridge had a handful of cafes, storefront galleries, and publishing collectives. The scene was dominated by the gothic shadow of John Wieners, already possessed by drugs and madness.
