When Dr. Sid Tolchin looks back on his long life of service, he remembers the faces of the young soldiers he operated on in Vietnam — and the very different faces that greeted him when he came home. Now 94 years old, Tolchin spent more than three decades in the Navy and many more years serving his community, embodying the quiet perseverance of a generation that gave much and asked little in return. “As a kid during World War II, I thought of veterans as the best our country had to offer,” he said.

Corn Maze returns after Helene-induced cancellation

For many families across the region, the autumn season wouldn’t feel complete without a trip to visit Eliada Home’s sprawling corn maze — and this year, the beloved attraction is back in full force. In 2024, Hurricane Helene forced the closure of the Fall Festival and Corn Maze just one day after opening, leaving the community and the organization with emotional and financial losses. For Eliada, which relies on this fundraiser as its largest annual event, the pause was deeply felt.

Weaverville to mark 9/11 with community remembrance

An observance will be held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the Weaverville Community Center, inviting residents to join together in remembrance of the lives lost during the deadliest act of terrorism in modern history. The observance will feature keynote remarks from Town Manager Scottie Harris, whose long career in fire and emergency service and the U.S. Air Force Reserves offers a personal perspective.
