WA government confirm a commissioner will be appointed to regional WA shire after council exodus

A former shire president in regional Western Australia says the decision to resign from the position after 20 years nearly "tore my heart out". The state government has confirmed a commissioner will be appointed to the Shire of Carnarvon, 900 kilometres north of Perth, following the mass resignation of councillors. Six out of eight councillors tendered their resignation over four days, leaving the shire council without a quorum.

Karratha residents warned to prepare for 200km/h winds as Tropical Cyclone Mitchell intensifies

Residents across Karratha and surrounding parts of the Pilbara have been urged to take shelter, with Tropical Cyclone Mitchell a chance to severely intensify as it approaches the coast. The system is moving south-west along the Pilbara coast, and is currently at category two strength. A cyclone Emergency Warning was issued for Karratha, and other communities between Mardie and Whim Creek, just after 3pm on Saturday. In means residents are now required to shelter indoors until the alert is lifted.

Tropical Cyclone Mitchell expected to form into category two system in WA

Residents in northern WA are being urged to prepare themselves and their properties, with Tropical Cyclone Mitchell expected to form off the northern Western Australian coast this weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) expects tropical low 21U to develop into Tropical Cyclone Mitchell on Saturday morning, and strengthen to a category two system as it moves parallel to the Pilbara coast.
