Crops have dried up in the Puno region of southern Peru. “It’s only just starting to rain,” says Jaén Cañazaca, a farmer and administrator for Cecovasa, a cooperative for coffee growers in the province of Sandia. It is the end of March and the country is several months into its worst drought in 58 years.

Beyond the environmental threats, the system also showed its value in the worst moments of the Covid-19 pandemic. “There was uncertainty about how we were going to survive and the state had no information about our situation,” says Sánchez. The SAAT was used to track infection hotspots so that aid could reach the most affected communities. “There is still a lot to do, but the SAAT is already helping a lot to prevent conflicts and provide clarity,” Sánchez says.

In Madre de Dios, the of the Peruvian Amazon and a hotbed of illegal wildlife trafficking, Magali Salinas has over the past 17 years rehabilitated and released hundreds of animals, including howler, capuchin and black-headed night monkeys, hawks, turtles and opossums. “I have freed more than 50 howler monkeys. Seeing them running to freedom is priceless,” said Salinas, founder of the Amazon Shelter rescue centre.
