“Tell me when you’re ready,” our guide encourages, standing in the warm, waist deep water of the Gulf of California, waiting for me to attempt to drown myself. Or, I guess, not to drown myself. I take a shaky breath and throw my weight to the right, flipping my wobbly sea kayak. I try not to panic as I go under, giving the skirt trapping me in the boat a firm yank, freeing my legs and letting me kick to the surface. Our guide, Ramon, asks if I want to try again and that’s a hard pass.
