Scientific Review of Botswana’s Elephant Hunting Programme
By Mike Chase and Scott Schlossberg – Elephants Without Borders (EWB) Summary 1. In 2019, Botswana ended a five-year moratorium on the hunting of African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana). Here, we provide expert, outside review of the hunting programme and its scientific basis. Notably, we used simulation models to determine how hunting quotas and environmental changes may affect elephant populations and expected trophy sizes. 2. Elephant populations in Botswana currently total ~140,000.

WIGL Radio 97 - Perfect Duluth Day
In 1963 I was a student at St. Clement’s Parochial School in Duluth’s West End. I entered a radio contest on WIGL. The first postcard to properly identify the translation of “Minoi, Minoi” would win a year-long pass to the Granada Theatre in Downtown Duluth. Even though 11 years old then, I knew it would relate to the radio station, so I sent in a postcard saying “Wiggle, Wiggle,” which was correct! I was interviewed by Lew Latto or Tac Hammer when I returned home from school.
Short Circuit 257 | General Google Warrants
On this Groundhog Day special we’re sniffing out a couple eternally recurrent subjects: limits on government surveillance and limits on property rights. We’re joined by IJ’s Seth Young and also are very pleased to announce we once again have on Mike Chase, author of How to Become a Federal Criminal. Mike gives an overview of a case pending in the Fourth Circuit that could have major ramifications for everyone with a smart phone and a Google account—that is, everyone, period.
Joining the dots: Day to day challenges for practitioners in delivering integrated dementia care
Abstract Despite the increasing policy focus on integrated dementia care in the UK, little is known about the opportunities and challenges encountered by practitioners charged with implementing these policies on the ground. We undertook an extensive, mixed-methods analysis of how a contemporary multidisciplinary dementia pathway in the UK was experienced and negotiated by service providers.
The Lawfare Podcast: @CrimeADay Teaches You How to Become a Federal Criminal
Published by The Lawfare Institute in Cooperation With We don't usually do humor on the Lawfare Podcast, but this week, Benjamin Wittes sat down with Mike Chase, whom you probably know better on Twitter as @CrimeADay, the long-time anonymous Twitter feed that tweets out one fact pattern a day that violates some combination of the criminal law and the Code of Federal Regulations.

The Federal Government’s War On Margarine
Margarine—the gateway condiment for food criminals—is one place where America’s rich tradition of food crimes truly began. Margarine prosecutions were some of the earliest examples of people being charged for conduct prohibited by agency regulations rather than criminal statutes alone. In 1888, for example, a grand jury returned a criminal indictment against a Massachusetts margarine seller named George R. Eaton for selling margarine without keeping logs of his margarine sales.
Congress must retake its power
It’s amazing that members of Congress are still called lawmakers. With all the media appearances and partisan bickering, who has the time to make law? For that, Congress has subcontracted the job out to employees in the executive branch. Sure, it goes against everything “Schoolhouse Rock” taught us about how laws are made, and it dictates an astounding array of rules, all the way down to the maximum allowable diameter for spaghetti (no more than 0.11 inches, if you were wondering).
Opinion | There oughta be a law! Oh, wait, there already is.

Why no one seems to know what ‘obstruction of justice’ actually means
By Mike Chase May 21, 2019 | 12:53pm | Updated May 21, 2019 | 12:53pm America has a crime problem: We treat criminal laws as if they were terms of service on a website — blindly agreeing and praying we’ll never need to know what they say. But it isn’t ordinary Americans who do the clicking; Congress clicks for us. Worse, most legislators are as blind to what’s inside the laws they enact, or how to enforce them, as your average iTunes user clicking “Yes” on the latest Apple user agreement.
How to Become a Federal Criminal
"Somebody with credentials has combed through a mountain of boring literature, highlighted all the ticklish parts and served them up for appreciation. This is an excellent book for people who like to start sentences with 'Did you know that â¦'" â New York Times Book Review "Both an entertaining and humorous look at our criminal justice system...Chase's book is enlightening and entertaining ... and a must have for defense attorneys who are looking to break the ice with a new client.
Lock Her Up! Lock Him Up! They Could Lock You Up
If you have ever found yourself looking at a “§” symbol, chances are you were reading a legal brief—or your cat had just walked across the keyboard. But recently that symbol has appeared in countless tweets, news articles and cable-news chyrons. Why? Millions of Americans can’t wait to find out what crime will finally bring down Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and a host of other unpopular political figures. Will it be obstruction of justice under 18 U.S.C. § 1503, § 1505 or § 1512?
The difference between ... — St. Peter's Fireside | Vancouver, B.C.
Alastair and I are living in between. We are constantly confronted with the tension of being “here and there”. We are living in one city while praying for another. We are planning and preparing for a church plant that is currently just a future hope. We are saying goodbye to friends while meeting new ones who live 3000 miles away. It is exhausting, exciting, heartbreaking, and overwhelming. I am so glad that God does not call us to two cities, two communities, two worlds.
How to Become Wise — St. Peter's Fireside | Vancouver, B.C.
Today I started reading through Proverbs. This is a book I tend to skim. The many words of wisdom feel like too many words in general. It is ironic because if I were an author I think this is the kind of book I would write—a book telling other people how to live. In fact, much of what I do as a counselor involves the wisdom given in Proverbs. However, I still skim it. Back to today, as I was reading I began to wonder, what is so important about wisdom?
Wait — St. Peter's Fireside | Vancouver, B.C.
Waiting is the hardest part. I think I have already written a blog on waiting? Amazing how there will always be more waiting in my life—and more blogs about waiting I am sure! This morning I read in Isaiah: “If you repented and patiently waited for me you would be delivered; If you calmly trusted in me you would find strength … all who wait for Him in faith will be blessed” (Isaiah 30:15, 18) This was exactly what I needed to hear today.
The Vow — St. Peter's Fireside | Vancouver, B.C.
This past weekend I had the beautiful responsibility of officiating the wedding of one of my best friends. Steve and I have been friends for 17 years and counting, so it was a special thing to have played such an intimate role in his wedding. Since the wedding I’ve been pondering commitment; the vows have been running through my head.
Listening to Young Atheists: A Christian Response — St. Peter's Fireside | Vancouver, B.C.
The Atlantic recently published a great read called Listening to Young Atheists: Lessons for a Stronger Christianity. Take the time to read it, it’s worth it. As usual, an article of this calibre is making its way around the social media sphere. There is one sentence that seems to have caught everybody’s attention: “I really can’t consider a Christian a good, moral person if he isn’t trying to convert me.” Gut-wrenching. Soul-checking. It makes my insides twinge a little. Could it really be?
