The Pirates’ 2022 season, as far as wins and losses, was lost a few months ago. As far as development, there was still value to be had. The Pirates called up myriad rookies who did gain experience in the majors, testing their mettle against the best in baseball, learning lessons along the way, growing slowly but surely. And to an extent, one can already imagine the value that had. Oneil Cruz seemed to work his way through a rough patch and figure some things out.

Young Pirates make difference in final game of the season, a win over the Cardinals

Prior to Wednesday’s season finale, which turned out to be a 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, Pirates manager Derek Shelton admitted that he gets frustrated too, sometimes. Much of that pregame discussion surrounded the season at large, because that was most appropriate. Sure, this win on the final day of the season at least sends the Pirates out on a high note, but it doesn’t really change anything.

Pirates lose 100th game of the season in extra-inning defeat to Cardinals

Oct. 5—Whether the Pirates lost 99 games this season or reached triple digits, it really wouldn't have changed much. This is still a team dwelling in the basement of their division and league, with a roster full of young players, trying to sell their fanbase on a brighter future that won't feel tangible until it arrives. Even if that's true, though, 100 losses is a big, round number, and certainly many fans would rather have avoided it.
