An All-Purpose Ingredient for Your Team
"Agility is the ability of our organization to renew itself, sense, learn, adapt, and change quickly, execute at speed, and thrive in a rapidly changing, ambiguous, turbulent environment while living our values & leadership behaviors, understanding the trade-offs and maintaining a focus on the customer." An American manufacturing executive sent me that description of Agile, the well-known approach that originated in the software development world.
Thinking Scientifically
There is a saying, attributed to Niels Bohr but apparently a Danish proverb, that it is difficult to predict, especially the future. In the challenging and uncertain times of the early 21st century this is less funny and more true than ever. In our turbulent time more situations require adaptation and learning. When the environment shifts, our skills need to shift too. Today a scientific mindset has become one of the most advantageous skills you and your team can have.
Tap the Power of Flow to Develop Lean Thinkers
The secret sauce of lean is the development of people. One person after the other, one quality issue after the next. When a person develops their technical competence, they become more autonomous. People who have a greater sense of autonomy will become more confident in their own abilities. When we are more confident in our abilities, we are more willing to try new things, to look for opportunities for kaizen. Kaizen, in turn, develops our technical skills.
Overcoming a Fear Of Failure Culture
by Andrew Quibell November 6, 2019 November 6, 2019 | Comments (0) 0 Comments | Post a Comment | Permalink Throughout my career I have often hit the ‘fear of failure’ mindset that stops people from taking or making the next step to fixing issues. Folks hesitate, spin their wheels or ponder too long on data in pursuit of perfection. Ever seen that in your organization?
Automating and optimizing a heavy equipment shop with 5S
If there is one thing that hurts performance and efficiency in shops today, it’s lack of organization and standardization. Every time someone stumbles over a hose or goes looking for a tool or a part, every time a mechanic walks 20 steps to grab something that should be at arm’s length, your shop is falling behind. Multiply that times the number of mechanics you employ and you’re looking at some serious deficiencies, not to mention prolonged equipment downtime.

An approach to becoming Agile in a dynamic world
This article was originally published in AME's Target magazine, Vol 34, No. 2, Summer Issue 2018 Helping employees develop scientific thinking empowers them to solve problems and make decisions The authors propose the following: (1) In complex, dynamic conditions, organizations do well to operate in an adaptive, Agile manner. This requires moving some decision-making downward, closer to where the action and quick feedback are, as opposed to traditional, centralized command-and-control.
Dealer.com: Burlington is our home and we are here to stay
by Mike Rother As Dealer.com’s General Manager, I can say with confidence that the future of our company is very bright. In 2016, Dealer.com joined the Cox Enterprises and Cox Automotive family of companies, and I believe wholeheartedly that it’s a great fit. Both companies were built on brave, innovative and entrepreneurial spirits. As a fourth-generation private company, Cox has always operated with a high sense of purpose and commitment to advancing local communities.

"What Do I Need to Know?"
I am a huge fan of Gwendolyn Galsworth’s Visual Workplace/Visual Thinking. She describes a visual workplace as “using visual devices for answering all the questions anyone has related to work…questions that are commonplace as well as those so specialized that others would have never thought, in a million years, to ask such a thing.” It’s the first of these questions she then lists - “What do I need to know?” - that I found most impactful.
Re: Grounding help
Per the TIA607B document, grounding should be taken to the electronic units inside of the Cabinet/rack. The requirements of the new standard are basicly stating that I should have no more than 0.1 ohms resistance for the telecommunications ground. The standard electrical ground is at 25 ohms resistance. So the telecommunications ground needs to be more robust than the electrical ground to handle ESD and surges.
