Prior to joining The Pilot in March 2011 to cover Virginia Beach government, he worked for three years at daily newspapers in North Carolina, where he covered stories ranging from local zoning scuffles to a suspected serial killer in rural Edgecombe County. He won nine awards from the North Carolina Press Association during his tenures with the Rocky Mount Telegram and the Fayetteville Observer.
