Mike Barnicle

Mike Barnicle is an award-winning broadcast and print journalist and is a frequent guest on NBC's Hardball show.

Mike Barnicle began his career as a speech writer and aid to prominent political figures, including one-time Vice Presidential candidate Edmund Muskie, former California Senator John Tunney, and the late Robert F. Kennedy which led to him landing a small role in the 1972 Robert Redford film The Candidate.

In 1973, Mike Barnicle left the screen temporarily behind and went to work as a columnist for The Boston Globe where he worked until 1998. He became known for his powerful, personal stories that championed the everyday struggles of regular people; police officers, firefighters, veterans, the disadvantaged and victims of crime.

To date, Mike Barnicle has written over 4,000 columns for newspapers including the Boston Herald, New York Daily News, and The Boston Globe and his work has also been seen in Time, The Huffington Post, ESPN the Magazine and Esquire among others.

Currently, Barnicle is a staff columnist for The Daily Beast where he examines issues of national and international importance, including social justice, politics, crime, and veterans’ affairs.

Mike Barnicle is also a regular on MSNBC’s highly rated morning program Morning Joe. Irascible and colorful, sarcastic and skeptical, Barnicle brings a fresh perspective to the day’s news.

A native of Massachusetts, Mike Barnicle is an avid Red Sox fan and often comments on the team and baseball in columns, radio shows, and on TV.

In his 40 years in the industry, Barnicle has won numerous local and national awards and recognition for his print and broadcast work, including honors from AP, UPI, DuPont Columbia and the National Headliners Awards.
