The neuroscience of UX
Neuroscience is the scientific study of the brain and the nervous system. Neuroscience can help designers understand why people react the way they do to certain things and how they make decisions. This knowledge can be used to design products that are more effective and user-friendly.

Exploring the Ethics of Persuasive Design
Persuasive design is a set of techniques used to influence user behavior in digital products. It has become increasingly popular as it allows companies to effectively inform and engage with their audience. Do these look familiar? “Only 2 left at this price. Order now.” “On sale for a limited time.” “7 others are looking at this.” According to Dr. Robert Cialdini, a behavioral scientist who’s studied the science of persuasion for more than 30 years — there are seven principles of persuasion.

The UX bootcamp model is broken
Sorry, would-be UX designers, don’t believe the marketing hype, UX bootcamps won’t do it for most of you. The model is broken. At best, you will get an introduction to UX — which is great — but most of these bootcamps won’t prepare you for a real-world job. Outrageously, some online UX courses offer “12-week zero-to-employment” with no experience necessary. They’re not cheap even assome trumpet a “job guarantee” as bait (read the fine print).
Design Principles: why a design works
Cognitive ease happens when there is no cognitive strain. When a design works, people experience cognitive ease. When it doesn’t, we experience an interruption to our state of flow (more about this later) that throws us into cognitive strain, and the design has failed.
The Principles of Dark UI Design
Dark UI designs are seen far and wide, from mobile screens to massive TVs. A dark theme can express power, luxury, sophistication, and elegance. However, designing for dark UIs presents multiple challenges and won’t meet expectations if implemented poorly. Before diving into the “dark side,” designers should look before they leap. Physicists say black isn’t really a color; it is the absence of light.

“Creativity takes courage.” — Henri Matisse The battle for our attention is greater than ever as rich digital content vies for millions of eyeballs.
How can strategic design thinking empower designers?
Lieutenant to his men: “Okay lads-who likes music?” “I do, sir.” “Me, sir!” “Me too, sir!” “Right. Sir!” Four of the men respond. Lieutenant: “Step up then, soldiers; I need you to move a grand piano to the officers’ mess hall.” How often do designers find themselves in the same position as these soldiers?
The 10 UX Deliverables Top Designers Use
The work of a UX designer happens in many different environments—from lean startups and Agile environments where teams work with little documentation, to consulting engagements for third-parties, or large enterprises and government entities with strict documentation requirements.
Coding for Designers - How Much Should We Know?
Take something at which you excel then push yourself further. A large section of the design community is locked in debate over whether designers should code. Some favor seeking out the unicorns who can do both, while others claim they don’t exist or only get in the way. Many designers think that designers and developers need to collaborate, but each discipline should stick to what they know. Others see no problem with professionals wearing multiple hats.
The End of Web Forms
Web forms are annoying, inefficient and they fill people with dread. Does anybody actually like filling out web forms? Nevertheless, they are a “necessary evil” that can make or break some of the most critical online interactions. Web forms are still mostly based on old paper forms—zombie leftovers of system-centric UIs (vs. user-centric). It’s been thirty years and we’re still typing the same information into forms over and over again.
Heuristic Analysis for UX – How to Run a Usability Evaluation
Design is an investment, not an expense. At the risk of stating the obvious: It’s not enough to design a nice-looking product; it also has to be usable, and if you are to extract the largest ROI from a product, its usability—which generally refers to ease-of-use—takes on a vital importance. Well-designed products have great usability. Great usability is a significant contributor to product quality and a seamless user experience.
What is UX Design? Common Misconceptions and UX Myths
Even after all these years, it seems like “UX” is still a buzzword at many companies — “We don’t just need a designer,” the VP of Product declares, “We need a UX Designer!” An audible gasp is heard in the room; everyone in the meeting nods in agreement while surreptitiously Googling “What is UX design?” and “What does a UX designer do?” By now, most people know that UX stands for user experience.
Will These UX Trends Stick or Fade Away?
Each year, hot new UX design trends emerge. On one side, UX designers test out new ideas and establish new patterns. On the other, consumers react with their preferences for more efficient and pleasant ways to interact with digital products. In the crazy profusion of alternatives, some designs are accepted and some are discarded.
Mobile eCommerce Best Practices for UX (with Infographic)
In recent years, it has become widely accepted that e-commerce businesses that are not mindful of mobile e-commerce best practices will be left in the dust, and stand to lose billions. Astute mobile UX designers know it’s essential to make sure all e-commerce experiences are designed for mobile. The phenomenal growth of e-commerce has fueled the advance of mobile e-commerce and the numbers paint a vivid picture.
Boost Your UX with These Successful Interaction Design Principles
There’s a fine line between an interaction that works and one that is unusable. Interaction design principles help bridge the divide. Well-executed interaction design plays a huge role in the implementation of great UX, and is indisputably one of the fundamentals of UX design principles. “Unusable” means “I’m moving on,” and no matter how “good looking” the visual design—how fancy that animation is—mess up the interaction design and your UX is kaput.
The True ROI of UX: Convincing the Executive Suite
High-quality customer experience (CX) is arguably the most effective way to drive engagement, spending, and loyalty for any business. User experience (UX)—the term applied more in the context of actual product use and which is a subset of CX—takes on vital importance in influencing the entire experience of the customer.
How to Create a Sketch Style Guide, Library, and UI Kit
Whether a Sketch expert or new to Sketch, designers are finding it a valuable resource for their design toolbox that can save a lot of time. Though not every designer chooses to do so, creating style guides in Sketch can make it even more of a time-saver. A style guide not only helps keep things consistent but also allows updates to elements like colors and icons across multiple documents with a lot less hassle.
Leveraging Mental Models in Product Design
Whether it’s innovating a new product or optimizing an existing one, product designers should leverage their product users’ knowledge of familiar products and interfaces. The payoff is smoother interactions, faster adoption rates, and better overall usability. People know how your product works and how to use it even before you design it. At least, they should.

Persuasive Design: using advanced psychology effectively
“Emotions shape all activity in adaptive ways. In the absence of emotional markers, decision making is virtually impossible.” — Saver & Damasio (1991) Websites have come a long way in a short space of time — it’s really quite amazing just how much some of the sites belonging to the last decade’s most established brands have changed from their first iteration.
How to use powerful Gestalt principles in design (with infographic)
The human brain processes about 4 billion bits of information per second (most of it unconsciously) and transmits information at 200 miles per hour. You don’t believe me? Look it up. All this neural activity would consume an enormous amount of energy if we were to be conscious of it all, so in order to save energy — while operating at maximum efficiency — the brain uses inductive reasoning and conditional probability to make sense of the world.
Art vs. Design - A Timeless Debate - Prototypr
Spend any amount of time working among professional designers and you learn that equating art with design is a surefire way to stir the pot and hear bold statements like: “Design is not art. Design has to function.” “Art is meant to provoke thought and emotions, but it doesn’t solve problems.” “Artists primarily work off instinct, whereas designers employ a methodical, data-driven process.” Unfortunately, the designer vs. artist discussion often deteriorates into ranting and raving.
The Tried and True Laws of UX [with Infographic] – UX Planet
The Tried and True Laws of UX [with Infographic] Remember when your mother warned you not to run down the stairs because you could fall and hurt yourself? Or when you held your palm over a candle’s flame and started feeling the burn? The “laws of UX” are similar — they are cause and effect relationships where one event (the cause) makes another event happen (the effect). Whether a designer acknowledges them or not, the “laws” rule and operate — and will affect the effectiveness of a design.

The true ROI of UX: B2B redesign case studies – UX Collective
User-centered design isn’t just about creating a great experience for customers — it’s also a smart business move. In our previous article “The True ROI of UX: Convincing the Executive Suite,” we talked about how to persuade company executives on the ROI of UX, and how to illustrate the value of UX in increasing business KPIs. In this second piece, we discuss how, in order to really drive the message home, it is essential that UX teams present successful case studies of similar B2B UX redesigns.
Dark UIs. The Good and the Bad. Dos and Don’ts.
Dark UIs are dramatic, stylish, and elegant. Nevertheless, designers should tread carefully if they choose to walk on the “dark side.” Creating the look and feel of a product is one of a designer’s primary responsibilities—the initial design decision must be appropriate to the product’s purpose, the particular situation, and its audience.
Danger Ahead: Telltale Signs It's Time to Bring in a UX Expert
Often, considerable resources and a whopping amount of money are put behind a product that is nevertheless just not living up to expectations. Warning bells clang, stakeholders panic, and the project is suddenly on life support. When a website or app is not performing as hoped for, it may be time to bring in a UX expert. Why? Industry surveys show that every dollar invested in UX brings a return of between $2 and $100 dollars.
Design for Emotion to Increase User Engagement – UX Planet
Designing for customer delight can lead to competitive advantage and growth. The reward for companies that connect with customers’ emotions in a positive way can be substantial. How can we identify the powerful motivators that lead to making those connections? Emotional design can influence those motivators, paving the way to competitive advantage and growth. Everything around us has been designed in some way and all design ultimately produces an emotion.
A Rant Against Pretty App Designs
“Guard against that vanity which courts a compliment, or is fed by it.” –Chalmers Surfing some design-inspiration sites with my hype-busting, critical U-X-ray eyes :) I often come away with smoke rising out of my ears. Like the title says this is a rant, but don’t take it too seriously. I’m trying to make a point.
Anticipatory Design: How to Create Magical User Experiences
This morning the song “This Magic Moment” by The Drifters popped into my head for no apparent reason. Those restless neural networks in our brains do funny things. They make seemingly unrelated, unconnected thoughts and concepts connect. Slapping my forehead I said to myself: “But, of course…” Recently I’ve been thinking about those magic moments in UX that happen when we’re interacting with our digital devices or services.
eCommerce UX – An Overview of Best Practices (with Infographic)
A thirtysomething Millennial is shopping for a cool running shoe she spotted on an Instagram sponsored post. She clicks through to the eCommerce site. The site takes forever to load on her mobile—she can’t buy the item without registering, nor can she find the return policy or contact info for customer service. She leaves faster than Usain Bolt can sprint 100 meters. Milliseconds earn millions. In retail, even a one-second delay in load time can negatively impact conversion by up to 20%.
