ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Six local teachers received Golden Apple Awards in March, including Guilford High School teacher Bryce Thomas, whom nominating students describe as a role model. Thomas is in his seventh year teaching Global Studies and African American History at Guilford High School. He also serves as Guilford’s JV Basketball coach, a role he has held for several years.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Sister Elaine Hirschenberger, a co-founder of the Rockford non-profit Womanspace, has retired as executive director as the organization marks 50 years of service to the community. Hirschenberger, a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis, helped establish the center in 1975 to provide an interfaith space for women. Womanspace celebrated its 50th anniversary last September. The organization was founded on the principles of empowering women through art and spirituality.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Volunteer Karen Tilly is being recognized as a Remarkable Woman during Women’s History Month for her years of service and fundraising efforts in the local community. Tilly is known for her work with several organizations, including MELD and the Kiwanis Club. Her work includes a lengthy tenure with MELD, an organization that supports at-risk young mothers, where she helped organize 8K runs.
