This story was updated to add new information. A fire that ignited near the intersection of Jasper and Mt. Vernon roads in Springfield Aug. 12 prompted localized evacuations that the sheriff's office lifted at 10 a.m. Aug. 13. The fire was estimated to be 16 acres at its peak before it was contained by firefighters. Residents in the area were advised of a Level 1 Be Ready evacuation advisory overnight.

Aug. 11, 2026, 4:03 a.m. PT Two recent thefts at the University of Oregon's Eugene campus resulted in nearly $10,000 in stolen goods and damages. Items stolen from Willamette Hall and Knight Library include musical instruments, laptops, and other computer equipment. Police do not believe the two incidents are related but have increased patrols in response to the break-ins. Although most students are gone for summer break, University of Oregon's Eugene campus is seeing a spike of activity.
