The Government has announced that a group of experts have been appointed to deliver a national digital ID system. Last year, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the scheme could be introduced as early as 2029. Designed to make it easier for people across the UK to use "vital government services", the programme will be used for a number of reasons - such as for renters to prove their identity to landlords, parents applying for free childcare, and right to work checks.
