1 INTRODUCTION Mapping natural habitats is fundamental for the conservation of biodiversity. The Habitats Directive (European Commission, 1992) requires EU member states to conserve habitats and species “of community interest” and to assess their conservation status every six years, by reporting on parameters such as habitat area, range, indicators of habitat quality and future provisions for habitat survival (European Commission, 2005). These reports require regular habitat mapping.
