1 Introduction Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease of unknown etiology, characterized by typical inflammatory changes in the synovial membrane of small and larger joints, leading to articular and extra-articular manifestations, functional disabilities, and a substantial socioeconomic and medical burden.
