January 2025 marked a significant moment in South Asian diplomacy when Lieutenant General Asim Malik, Pakistan’s intelligence chief, visited Bangladesh. It was the first such trip by the head of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence, or ISI, since the country’s independence from Pakistan in 1971. Malik arrived in Dhaka via Dubai and was received by Lieutenant General Muhammad Faizur Rahman, the quartermaster general of the Bangladesh army.
