Introduction Reproduction and the optimization of lifetime reproductive fitness anchors the seasonal life histories of many northern aquatic organisms (Shuter et al. 2012). Because of this fixed entrainment, rapid environmental changes prior to and during reproduction can drive declining recruitment and threaten the sustainability of ecologically and culturally significant fish populations (Farmer et al. 2015, Barta et al. 2024).
