NRL SuperCoach wrap round 24: Look left-field to replace injured Nathan Cleary
Nathan Cleary has avoided shoulder surgery and will be back for the finals. And while that’s good news for the Panthers, it’s no good for SuperCoaches given he’s out for the rest of head-to-head and overall seasons. He’ll be the most popular sell this coming round and the best replacement is ... drum roll ... nobody in the HFB position. While being a strong position in the past for SuperCoach, halfback is barren in SuperCoach this year with no fit player in the top 15 for overall average.

Heading into the final round of the Mackay and District Rugby League season, the equation for Souths Sharks is simple - win, and they’ll be playing finals footy. State of Origin: Reuben Cotter’s junior coaches reflect following Wally Lewis Medal | CODE Sports
Dale Shearer, Martin Bella, Kevin Campion, Wendell Sailor, Daly Cherry-Evans, and now, Reuben Cotter. Cotter joined a remarkably extensive list of Sarina Crocs to represent Queensland when he made his State of Origin debut last year. Randell now has 17 AFLW games under her belt with the Gold Coast Suns, and has been identified as an emerging leader. Fortunately she reneged on her initial refusal. “One of my friends was like come over and play footy, but with Queensland being a rugby league state, and my siblings and cousins, they all play league,” Randell said.

For the most part, Mackay’s recent losses have been promising, with three of the last four by two tries or less.
VFL: Demons a class above gallant North
The Casey Demons entered Saturday’s VFL clash with North Melbourne in unfamiliar territory, having lost two of their last three. It was a shock to the system for the reigning premiers, who lost just once for the entirety of last season. And the Demons didn’t face an easy task in the red-hot Kangaroos, who were fresh off 42, 66, and 75-point trouncings in their last four matches.
VFL: Bullants hang on in Bell Street belter
The arms of Jean-Luc Velissaris lie in wait as he backtracks courageously. He doesn’t know what’s coming the other way, nor does he care, for if he clunks this mark he has a chance to seal a gripping Northern Bullants victory – just their second of the season. Clunk the mark he does. And convert the set-shot he does. The goal extends the Bullants’ lead to seven points, as the clock ticks over 30 minutes in the fourth quarter.

Inside the Adrenaline's 1742-day winning drought, and how they broke it
The Adelaide Adrenaline’s back-to-back AIHL road wins over the Central Coast Rhinos were close to five years in the making. 1742 days to be exact. It’s certainly a long time between drinks, for players and fans alike. Although captain Joey MacDougall reveals there weren’t too many had to celebrate. “We have a pretty zero-tolerance approach after a Saturday game where we know we have to play on the Sunday,” MacDougall told The Inner Sanctum.
VFLW: Borough down Blues to make it five in a row
Port Melbourne’s only defeat of the VFLW season came in round one at the hands of Carlton, and the sides met again on Sunday, but with a very different outcome, as the Borough prevailed 3.5 (23) to 0.8 (8) at ETU Stadium. It was a day to forget for the Blues, who were kept goalless across all four quarters, meaning they now have just one goal across their last two games.
VFL: Giants bounce back with last-gasp win over Borough
Port Melbourne trails GWS by three points, just seconds remain on the clock. The Sherrin sails to the top of the goal-square, the Borough throwing everything they have at a steadfast Giants defence. The siren sounds, footy tumbling through the air. A collective breath is drawn.

The win was just Southport’s second of the season and its first since round one.
VFLW: Deserving Dons stave off fast finishing Demons
Paige Scott stole the show as Essendon clung on desperately for a 4.13 (37) to 5.5 (35) victory over Casey at the NEC Hangar on Sunday. Scott, who was taken with pick eight in the 2022 national draft, played a decisive hand finishing with 20 disposals and three goals from six scoring shots. The win is the reigning premiers first of 2023, following a shaky start to their premiership defence accentuated by 54-point drubbing at the hands of Carlton last week.
VFL: Clinical Casey breeze past Dolphins to remain undefeated
Casey is going from strength to strength in the 2023 VFL season, putting Frankston to the sword in a comprehensive 16.13 (109) to 7.7 (49) victory at Casey Fields on Sunday. The win sees the undefeated Demons move to the top of the ladder with an empathic percentage of 190.7 after three rounds, having won by no less than 37 points.
VFL: Demons kick off flag defence in style
Following an almost-perfect 2022 in which Casey only lost one game all season, its 2023 VFL campaign began as you’d expect: with victory. The Demons proved themselves to be a class above Footscray at Casey Fields on Saturday, walking away with a comfortable 13.16 (94) to 8.9 (57) victory. But comfortable wasn’t the term befitting of Casey’s opening quarter however, as the Demons couldn’t buy a goal despite complete ascendancy around the ground.
Cheer Cheer: Bloods rally to make it back-to-back Turf 1 flags
If Springvale South’s grand final demons of the past decade hadn’t been exorcised following last season’s DDCA Turf 1 premiership, they may very well be now. For the Bloods have gone back-to-back, downing Buckley Ridges by six wickets at Arch Brown Reserve on Saturday. It’s a far cry from the team that lost five grand finals without triumph in the preceding decade.
James Seymour selection a win for all cricketers
After years of being in the top echelon of Victorian Premier Cricket run-scorers, a Ryder Medal, and an astounding average of 91.33 this season, James Seymour is a first-class cricketer. That’s not to mention his century against a Victorian State Squad side, his century for Randwick-Petersham in a brief NSW Grade Cricket stint, as well as his three centuries in the Northern Territory. And that’s only taking into account the past year alone.

Superb Panthers outclass Raiders to make it eight on the trot
Penrith can cross Canberra off their scoreless first half hit-list, superb defence going hand-in-hand with lethal attack and laying the foundations for their eighth-straight victory. The Raiders had all the ball early and came close time and time again: Whitehead scored a try that was disallowed, and Papalii was miraculously held up by five Panthers. But they had no points to show. The Panthers resisted, resisted, and resisted.
ROUND 12 MATCH REPORT | North Queensland Cowboys 12-14 Canberra Raiders
Mitch Bourke reviews Canberra’s narrow victory over North Queensland. Here’s how the game went.
Raiders scrape to tight win over determined Cowboys
The effects of monumental wins over the Roosters and Rabbitohs shone through for Canberra, who looked in desperate need of a break. They still managed to get it over the line, holding off the spirited Cowboys. The first half was a tight and low-scoring affair: North Queensland bought their A-game but their early kicking tactic – kicking on the first and second tackles, as well as repeatedly on the fourth – restricted them from building momentum.
ROUND 11 MATCH REPORT | Canberra Raiders 18-12 South Sydney Rabbitohs
Mitch Bourke reviews Canberra’s courageous win over South Sydney. Here’s how the game went.
Defiant Raiders seek vengeance over Roosters to get season back on track
Revenge is a dish best served cold. Haunted by the ghosts of last year’s infamous Grand Final, the embattled Raiders pulled off a season-defining upset to bring the Roosters 10 game SCG winning streak to an end. The see-sawing blockbuster saw four lead changes as Canberra dug deep to finish strongly after being trapped in their defensive 20 for a good chunk of the first half. Questions were raised about how Canberra would perform in the absence of Josh Hodgson, and their halves pairing stepped up.
