Letter: Conservatives should support better-funded IRS
I read in the July 15 edition of The Beaumont Enterprise that a better funded IRS (thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act) is able to review and investigate more cases of potential tax fraud…mainly committed by high-income delinquents. So far, the IRS has collected millions of dollars from these cheaters who may face criminal charges. The average individual/family routinely pays their fair share of taxes.
LETTER: Reviewing Texas Legislature's harmful moves in education
I recently read in the Beaumont Enterprise that BISD Superintendent Shannon Allen wrote a letter to our State Legislature condemning the school voucher program supported by Republicans. Glad Dr. Allen did this. And guess who authored this bill? Our own State Senator Brandon Creighton! He wants to use tax payer money to fund private schools at the expense of public schools…shameful -- another Republican ploy to prey on those who rely on public education.
LETTER: Kudos to Beaumont muralists, commissioner
I just want to give a shout out to the Beaumont Enterprise for reporting on the artists and their awesome murals beautifying our city! I watched one artist, Malcom Byers, atop a crane high up on the side of a tall building opposite the Jefferson Theater putting the finishing touches on his amazing mural of baseball great Frank Robinson who was born in Beaumont (which I did not know)! And I learned from the Enterprise about artists Ines Alvidres and Megan Cobb who gave insight into the...
LETTER: Another mass shooting should prompt action
Ok…another mass shooting in the US, this time at Michigan State University. Sixty-seven mass shootings in the US so far this year…insane, unbelievable, disgusting, unacceptable and intolerable. As Paul Begala suggests: increase funding for police and decrease the number of guns in the US.
LETTER: Football glorifies 'contained violence'
I’ve wanted to write this letter for years and now following Damar Hamlin’s football injury, I feel it’s time. In the 1960s, I played high school and college football. I gained respect and admiration from classmates, friends and family. Football taught me the value of hard work, discipline, sacrifice and teamwork.
Texas Soybeans: Defoliators Can Build in a Hurry
Green cloverworm. Photo: Iowa State University I know some of you rice farmers also grow soybeans which can be an excellent choice for rotation with rice. I also know soybeans can be a risky crop for Southeast Texas farmers. Our unpredictable weather (sometimes heavy rains at planting and near harvest and drought conditions during podfill) frequently is not conducive to soybean production. But this year, at least east of Houston, weather has so far cooperated.
Keep eyes peeled for aphid pest that’s been found in Texas, Louisiana rice
• By Dr. Mo Way, Kate Crumley and Dr. David Kerns • English grain aphids and black sooty mold on a Wharton County, Texas, rice plant — photo by Kate Crumley, Texas A&M AgriLife Just want to alert you rice farmers and crop consultants to be on the look out for the English grain aphid. As you probably know, aphids have piercing-sucking mouthparts, like a rice stink bug. But aphids suck up plant juices from the vascular phloem tissue of plants.
Texas Rice: Seeing A New Aphid? Better Call Mo
Winged adult English grain aphid in rice. Photo: Kate Crumley, Texas AgriLife Extension Just want to alert you rice farmers and crop consultants to be on the look out for an aphid…English grain aphid. As you probably know, aphids have piercing-sucking mouthparts, like a rice stink bug. But aphids suck up plant juices from the vascular phloem tissue of plants. They get rid of excess fluids by excreting a sugary substance called honeydew which provides food for an organism called sooty mold fungus.
Texas Rice: Draining Fields; Spider Mites; Beaumont Field Day
Quite a bit of Texas rice is now being drained in preparation for harvest. In general, the Texas rice crop looks good, but recent rains have put a damper on drying fields in advance of harvest. You sure don’t want to rut up your fields if you plan to ratoon crop. I have recently received inquiries about a mite attacking maturing rice. I identified the species as Schizotetranychus oryzae. I don’t know what the common name is, but it is a spider mite that frequently attacks rice foliage.
Sharing knowledge
By Mo Way, Fernando Correa and Maribel Cruz The rice delphacid (Tagosodes orizicolus) is a serious rice pest in much of Latin America and the Caribbean. In 2015, the Texas ratoon crop was severely damaged by this plant-sucking insect, which is related to leafhoppers. I don’t know how it got to Texas, but I suspect it was carried here by storm(s) passing over Mexico or Central America. We have not observed it in Texas since 2015.
