Frontiers | Iron or sulfur respiration-an adaptive choice determining the fitness of a natronophilic bacterium Dethiobacter alkaliphilus in geochemically contrasting environments
Introduction Modern soda lakes, defined by high salinity and pH, occur worldwide and are thought to harbor relict microbial communities (Zavarzin, 1993; Zhilina and Zavarzin, 1994). Despite several extreme parameters, soda lakes are characterized by high productivity and contain fully functional and diverse haloalkaliphilic microbial communities that drive the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur (Jones et al., 1998; Zavarzin et al., 1999; Sorokin et al., 2011, 2014a).
