Nitric oxide synthase 1 (NOS1) is upregulated by chronic exposure to nicotine and to oxycodone in the interpeduncular nucleus (IPN), a brain area associated with nicotine withdrawal. We hypothesize that NOS1 upregulation in the IPN is necessary for drug tolerance and mediates withdrawal upon abstinence.
