The formation and temporal evolution of Al3Zr dispersoids in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy was investigated by in-situ small-angle X-ray scattering during different homogenization treatments. The aim was to determine the most effective homogenization parameters for obtaining a high number-density and small size of the dispersoids. Nucleation of the dispersoids was found to start above 400 oC and was boosted after isothermal holding at 425 oC.

Characterization of Zr-Containing Dispersoids in Al–Zn–Mg–Cu Alloys by Small-Angle Scattering

Abstract : The characterization of Zr-containing dispersoids in aluminum alloys is challenging due to their broad size distribution, low volume fraction, and heterogeneous distribution within the grains. In this work, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) were compared to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) regarding their capability to characterize Zr-containing dispersoids in aluminum alloys.
